The Thrifty Bride’s Guide to Planning an Affordable Reception

The Thrifty Bride’s Guide to Planning an Affordable Reception

When Kevin and I got married this past summer in Kansas City, we wanted to have a wonderful and memorable wedding reception, but we also didn’t want to spend a fortune. With so many ideas and options available, we quickly became adept at figuring out what were actually the best deals. I’ve compiled a list of our favorite money-saving tricks from our ceremony and reception for 120 guests. We hope it helps you have a wonderful, yet affordable wedding reception in Kansas City, too!

Bridal bouquet for affordable weddings

FLOWERS: We purchased 50 calla lilies from Costco, which were delivered right to our door two days before the wedding. Along with one dozen white roses and some teal ribbon that we purchased separately, we made our own bouquets.

TOTAL SPENT: $92

affordable Italian catering from Bucca di Beppo

RECEPTION DINNER: We wanted good Italian food and salad, but it was a lot cheaper to make our own salad bar and then get the Italian dishes and bread catered. We used Buca di Beppo and purchased full pans of four of our favorite pasta dishes, and one half-pan of a gluten-free item for our guests who needed that option.

TOTAL SPENT: $945

Sangrias - affordable wedding reception - drinks on a budget

DRINKS: Our reception venue (The Meadowlark Event Center) allowed us to BYOB, which saved us a lot of money. We purchased red and white boxed sangrias and our favorite toasting “champagne” (Andres Sparkling Peach Moscato), and a variety of two liter sodas from Walmart, as well as a beer keg from our local liquor store.

TOTAL SPENT: $300

Affordable wedding reception centerpieces

RECEPTION ITEMS: We purchased reception items through Amazon (teal table runners), Dollar Tree (pepper grinders, bowls for olive oil dipping, activity books and crayons for the kids, serving utensils), Etsy (small glass bottles for olive oil), and Webstaurant (absolute best prices on nice disposable plates, utensils, cups, hot cups, napkins, olive oil, and three large beverage dispensers for sangrias and water).

TOTAL SPENT: $400

Affordable wedding cake on a budget

CAKE: I actually really love Walmart Bakery cakes, and they make absolutely beautiful wedding cakes. I ordered a traditional white three-tiered wedding cake for our main cake, and a chocolate sheet cake for the groom’s cake. Both were completely gone except for the top tier of our main cake (which was thankfully saved before it could get eaten at the reception too!).

TOTAL SPENT: $186

The Groom’s Suite Gets an Upgrade!

The Groom’s Suite Gets an Upgrade!

The Meadowlark wedding venue is complete with a caterer’s kitchenette, bridal suite, and even a top-notch groom’s suite. The private room is complete with a built-in bar that we discovered in a pub in rural Iowa, a large sectional sofa, card table, TV, a regulation dartboard, a foosball table, and most recently, an air hockey table! Now, the guys have plenty to keep them busy while the ladies are getting ready in the fully furnished bridal suite. Most Kansas City wedding venues don’t even have a groom’s suite–ours is definitely one of the coolest out of all the wedding venues Kansas City has to offer! Take advantage of the early access our affordable wedding package offers on Friday to stock the bar’s fridge, and be ready for Saturday! The bridal party can take all the time in the world to get ready, and the guys will never even notice! Follow the link below to take a tour and check it out for yourself!

We had an awesome time with all the other priemer wedding services at the The Perfect Wedding Guide Kansas City Bridal Show last weekend! What a huge event, with a great turnout–Kansas City has so many awesome wedding services from caterers and photographers, to custom, handmade wedding decorations and gifts!  We had such a great time checking out all the amazing booths, and delicious food! It was so much fun for us to meet all the future brides and grooms that stopped by our booth. The Meadowlark Event Center had a drawing for a free sparkler send-off for one lucky bride–congratulations Nicole Dalton! This was such fun, we can’t wait until the next one!
